SOMEONE WHO TAUGHT ME TO BE PROUD OF MY IDENTITY:

SOMEONE WHO TAUGHT ME TO BE PROUD OF MY IDENTITY: My gramps. He was proud of his choices. He was proud of who he was. He was proud to call himself Japanese American.

I think about him a lot & want to make space for him on here. He makes me proud to be Japanese American and he reminds me that his story, my story, OUR stories are important. He worked on starting organizations to make sure the past doesn’t get forgotten. I’m grateful to the @gfbnec Hanashi Oral History Project that captured parts of his story so I can still go online and hang out with him any time I want. ➡️Swipe to listen to part of his interview!

YES, YES, and more YES to @wangstagram!! If you aren’t familiar with either of these books, don’t wait another minute!

✨10/10 would recommend both of these books!

✨The Prince and the Dressmaker: Let me just say, I finished it a couple days ago and I’m still embracing it in a tight hug. No spoilers, but it’s about being true to you and the journey that takes us on (and all the hard decisions that can come along with that).

✨Stargazing: Add this to the list of books I didn’t know I needed while growing up! #representationmatters It is centered around a friendship and reminds readers how a shared identity does not equate to identical experiences, interests, or sense of self!

✨Can’t post this without drawing your attention to the beautiful art @wangstagram creates that tells the story just as much as the text!! 😍

Can’t close out the first week of #APAHM before I celebrate some #APIjoy through self love!

A little background of me and things I love about my API heritage:
✨I’m Japanese American. Can’t be me without one or the other.
✨I have that mottainai spirit within me—can’t waste anything! This is also probably why I am so sentimental!
✨I grew up with a lot of Japanese American community—church, basketball leagues, festivals, etc.
✨I was always taught to take pride in my family history, thx gramps!
✨Even though I didn’t grow up speaking Japanese, there were always certain phrases, words, or foods that I didn’t even realize weren’t English.
✨I can make a mean spam musubi 😂
✨It’s hard to say what generation I am. My dad immigrated to the U.S. from Japan when he was 8, but his dad (my grandpa) was born in the U.S. A similar situation happened with my maternal great grandmother. #undefinable
✨I had at least 10 API teachers in my K-12 schooling experience that always made me feel seen. #representationmatters

It’s time to show up! This month is Asian Pacif

It’s time to show up!

This month is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month! First, it is an honor that I get to share these weekly challenges Mae (from @thedimpledteacher) and I have been working on to encourage EVERYONE to learn, reflect, and grow this month!

Let’s start with terminology:
•API: Asian Pacific Islander
•AAPI: Asian American and Pacific Islander
These terms are not actually interchangable. The difference is seen in immigration status as one can live in the U.S. and not consider themselves American.

You may also see:
•APISA: Asian Pacific Islander & South Asian
This term is an extension of API & also brings attention to South Asian cultures such India, Pakistan, Nepal, & Afghanistan to name a few. *South Asian identities would have already been acknowledged under the A for Asian if as a society there was a greater awareness of actual Asian countries.
